Japan as Viewed by 17 Creators
2011-12-06
Seventeen authors (nine from France or French-speaking countries, eight from Japan) brought together in the same book, a succession of freely created short stories about the same universe: Japan. The French, of course, journeyed to Japan for the occasion. Each cartoonist was sent for two weeks to a different city in the archipelago (Joann Sfar in Tôkyô, Emmanuel Guibert in Kyôto, Nicolas de Crécy in Nagoya, etc.) to bring back an original creation. The Japanese tell us about their district, the city where they live or where they originally come from (Kazuichi Hanawa's story being about the northern island of Hokkaido, Jiro Taniguchi's about the town of Tottori, etc.) The result is often inspired, always surprising: Japan through new eyes. "Japan" will appear simultaneously in French, Japanese, Spanish, Italian and English. Along with "A Patch Of Dreams" by Hideji Oda, it is the first step in a series of international creations with left-to-right reading direction, created for us by some of the best European and Japanese comic book artists. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6: Stone Ocean
2011-12-06
SERIES 6: "Stone Ocean"Time: Early 21st Century -- Place: A Florida prisonSet in and around the maximum-security Green Dolphin Street prison in Florida, surrounded by palm trees, swamps, and man-eating alligators, this storyline stars Jolyne Kujo (Stand: Stone Free), the daughter of Jotaro Kujo. After being falsely accused of a hit-and-run automobile accident, she is sentenced to 15 years in jail, a plot which may be orchestrated by some dark conspiracy, some unknown enemy. Series 6 is a weird prison story in which Jolyne discovers her own powers and other Stand Users while trying to escape the pen. Her dad Jotaro Kujo returns for a cameo in the first few volumes, and Dio, the ultra-villain of the JoJo series, also shows up in several flashbacks, with a fragment of his corpse playing a major plot point. This series appears to be an attempt for Araki to relaunch the series for new readers (the graphic novels are numbered starting with "Vol. 1" with "JoJo Vol. 63", and so forth, in small letters) by re-explaining the Stands and introducing a slinky, appealing female protagonist. And for the most part, it takes place within a literally confined environment -- Araki had previously done some short manga stories set in jail, so maybe that's where his current interests lie. Note also that Jolyne is the first American (specifically Japanese-American) JoJo protagonist. The sheer level of weirdness is also pretty mind-boggling, with all kinds of bizarre phenomena -- rains of frogs, time distortion, and some extremely odd, conceptual Stands. And the ending is probably one of the strangest things ever to happen in the series. From the Jojo FaqJojo's Bizarre Adventure Series Follows the following order:1: Phantom Blood - Jonathan Joestar2: Battle Tendency - Joseph Joestar3: Stardust Crusaders - Jotaro Kujo (first use of Stands)4: Diamond is Unbreakable - Josuke Higashikata5: Vento Aureo - Giorno Giovana6: Stone Ocean - Jolyne Kujo7: Steel Ball Run - Gyro Zeppeli & Johnny Joestar (alternate universe Jonathan Joestar)

The following content is intended for mature audiences and may contain sexual themes, gore, violence and/or strong language. Discretion is advised. Good-Bye is the third in a series of collected short stories from Drawn & Quarterly by the legendary Japanese cartoonist Yoshihiro Tatsumi, whose previous work has been selected for several annual “top 10” lists, including those compiled by Amazon and Time.com. Drawn in 1971 and 1972, these stories expand the prolific artist’s vocabulary for characters contextualized by themes of depravity and disorientation in twentieth-century Japan. Some of the tales focus on the devastation the country felt directly as a result of World War II: a prostitute loses all hope when American GIs go home to their wives; a man devotes twenty years of his life to preserving the memory of those killed at Hiroshima, only to discover a horrible misconception at the heart of his tribute. Yet, while American influence does play a role in the disturbing and bizarre stories contained within this volume, it is hardly the overriding theme. A philanthropic foot fetishist, a rash-ridden retiree, and a lonely public onanist are but a few of the characters etching out darkly nuanced lives in the midst of isolated despair and fleeting pleasure.

Disappearance Diary
2011-11-30
From ANN:An autobiographical work in which Hideo Azuma tells the story of his inability to cope with the pressures of his job as a mangaka and of his exeriences with alcoholism. The work is split into three sections, each of which details one of Azuma's breakdowns. The first section (Walking At Night) is set in 1989 when Azuma suddenly walked out on both his job and his family and became homeless for the first time. Much of this section is given over to describing the practicalities of eating, sleeping, and killing time whilst homeless. The second section (Walking Around Town) covers a similar set of events in 1992 but this time Azuma managed to find labouring work as a gas pipe layer after a period of living rough. This section also looks back over Azuma's career and describes the pressures he worked under in the 1970s and 80s. The third section (Alcoholic Ward) covers the author's descent into full-blown alcoholism and his experiences of being committed to a hospital rehab programme in 1998.
